What Does Garba Mean?

The word "Garba" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Garbh," meaning "womb." This name alludes to the prominent presence of a centrally lit earthen lamp traditionally used in Garba, known as a "Garbha Deep." This lamp symbolizes life, the womb, and the divine feminine energy or Shakti. The lit lamp represents the presence of the divine within the womb and, metaphorically, within the circle of dancers.

The Dance:

Garba is a folk dance characterized by its circular formations and rhythmic clapping, often performed during the nine-day Hindu festival of Navratri, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. The circular movements are symbolic of the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth, mirroring the cosmic dance of creation and destruction.

Costumes and Music:

The vibrant, swirling costumes of Garba dancers are a feast for the eyes. Women adorn themselves in intricately embroidered Chaniya Cholis, a three-piece attire consisting of a long, flowing skirt (Chaniya), a blouse (Choli), and a dupatta (scarf). Men typically wear Kediyu, a tunic with a mirror work jacket, and Dhoti, a long loincloth. The rhythmic clapping is accompanied by the spirited tunes of traditional instruments like the Dhol (drum), Manjira (cymbals), and Shehnai (oboe), creating an infectious energy that's impossible to resist.

It's believed that Goddess Durga, in her various forms, descends upon Earth during Navratri, and Garba is performed as a way to honor and celebrate her divine power.
