The concept of gotra plays a pivotal role in Hindu marriage customs. It forms the basis of exogamy, a practice where marriage within the same gotra is forbidden. This restriction stems from the belief that members of the same gotra are descendants of the same sage, making them akin to siblings. Marrying within the same gotra is considered sagotra marriage and is generally taboo.

### Origins and Evolution

The origins of the gotra system are shrouded in the mists of time. Some scholars trace it back to the Vedic period, while others believe it emerged later. Ancient Hindu texts like the Manusmriti and the Mahabharata mention gotras, indicating their significance in ancient Indian society.

Initially, gotras were probably linked to specific Vedic schools or Shakhas, where disciples received knowledge from a revered Guru. Over time, as these disciples branched out, they carried the lineage of their Guru, forming distinct gotras.
