As an expert in disaster preparedness and safety, I would like to clarify some common misconceptions and provide accurate information regarding the safest place to be during an earthquake.
Contrary to popular belief,
DO NOT stand in a doorway. While it may seem like a strong part of the house due to its support from the surrounding frame, doorways are not inherently safer than any other part of the house. In fact, you may be at risk if the ceiling falls or if there are heavy fixtures or objects above the doorway that could fall.
Instead, the safest strategy during an earthquake is to
Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Here's what you should do:
1.
Drop to your hands and knees to prevent being knocked over by the shaking.
2.
Cover your head and neck with your arms to protect these vital areas.
3.
Hold On to a sturdy piece of furniture, like a table or desk, which can provide some cover and support.
If you are in a room with no furniture to hold onto, then move to an interior wall or corner and follow the drop, cover, and hold on method.
Additionally, avoid areas with large windows, heavy objects, or appliances that could fall, and stay away from glass, bookshelves, and other items that could shatter.
Remember, every situation is unique, and you should adapt these guidelines to your specific circumstances.
