Charcoal burns at intense temperatures, up to
2,700 --C (
4,890 --F). By comparison the melting point of iron is approximately
1,200 to 1,550 --C (
2,190 to 2,820 --F). Due to its porosity, it is sensitive to the flow of air and the heat generated can be moderated by controlling the air flow to the fire.
