The League of Nations, the precursor to the United Nations, condemned Italy's actions but was unable to effectively intervene due to the lack of military power and the reluctance of its member states to take action against a fellow member.

Despite international condemnation, Italy continued its campaign, and by May 1936, the Italian forces had captured the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. Emperor Haile Selassie was forced into exile, and Ethiopia was annexed by Italy, becoming part of the Italian East Africa colony, which also included Eritrea and Italian Somaliland.

The Italian occupation of Ethiopia was short-lived, however. With the outbreak of World War II, the tide began to turn. In 1941, Ethiopian forces, with the support of British and other Allied troops, launched a successful counteroffensive to liberate their country. By November of that year, the Italian forces were defeated, and Ethiopia was once again an independent nation.

The invasion and subsequent occupation had profound effects on Ethiopia and the international community. It exposed the weaknesses of the League of Nations and the failure of the international community to prevent aggression by a major power. It also highlighted the brutality of modern warfare, particularly the use of chemical weapons, which would later be a significant concern during World War II.

The Italian invasion of Ethiopia is a stark reminder of the destructive power of unchecked ambition and the importance of international cooperation in maintaining peace and security. It serves as a lesson in the need for strong, effective international institutions capable of preventing and responding to acts of aggression.
