As an expert in emergency preparedness, I would like to share some crucial tips on how to protect yourself during an earthquake.
When an earthquake strikes, it's important to
DROP to the ground, take
COVER under a sturdy piece of furniture like a table or desk, and
HOLD ON until the shaking stops. This is known as the "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" method. Here's a step-by-step guide:
1.
DROP to your hands and knees to prevent being knocked down.
2.
COVER by getting under a sturdy table or desk. If no furniture is available, move to an interior wall or corner and crouch down with your arms protecting your head and neck.
3.
HOLD ON to your shelter and be prepared to move with it until the shaking stops.
4. Stay away from
danger spots such as windows, glass, heavy appliances, and tall furniture that could fall.
5. If you are in bed when the earthquake hits, stay there and cover your head and neck with a pillow. Avoid getting up to run as this increases the risk of injury from falling debris.
6. If you are outdoors, find an open area away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
7. If you are in a vehicle, pull over and stay inside until the shaking stops. Avoid stopping under overpasses, bridges, or large signs.
Remember, aftershocks are common following the initial quake and can be just as dangerous. Be prepared for these and continue to follow safety protocols.
