Hello, I'm a medical professional with a background in cardiology. I'd be happy to explain what Short QT Syndrome (SQTS) is.
Short QT Syndrome is a rare genetic cardiac disorder characterized by a shorter than normal QT interval on an electrocardiogram (ECG). The QT interval represents the time between the start of the Q wave and the end of the T wave in the heart's electrical cycle, which corresponds to the time from the beginning of the depolarization of the ventricles to the end of their repolarization. In SQTS, this interval is abnormally short, which can lead to a rapid and chaotic heartbeat known as
ventricular arrhythmia. This condition increases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest and can be life-threatening.
The syndrome is typically inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, which means it can be passed down through generations. It is also associated with mutations in genes responsible for the function of ion channels in the heart.
Symptoms of SQTS can include
palpitations,
syncope (sudden loss of consciousness), and in severe cases,
sudden cardiac death. Diagnosis is usually made through an ECG, and treatment may involve medications to control heart rhythm or, in some cases, the use of an
implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) to prevent sudden cardiac arrest.
