As a cardiovascular specialist, I can explain the journey of oxygen-poor blood within the heart. After systemic circulation,
oxygen-poor blood returns to the heart via the
superior vena cava and the
inferior vena cava. These two large veins carry the deoxygenated blood to the
right atrium of the heart. From the right atrium, the blood moves to the
right ventricle when the tricuspid valve opens. The
right ventricle then pumps this blood to the
lungs through the
pulmonary artery for oxygenation.
