An
ischemic stroke occurs when there is a blockage in the blood supply to a part of the brain, leading to a lack of oxygen and nutrients. This blockage is typically caused by a
blood clot that either forms in the brain or travels to the brain from elsewhere in the body, such as the heart. When the blood flow is obstructed, brain cells in the affected area begin to die within minutes due to the lack of oxygen, a process known as
cerebral ischemia. Another potential cause of ischemic stroke is
arterial stenosis, which is the narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the brain. This narrowing can be due to atherosclerosis, a condition where fatty deposits build up in the artery walls, reducing the space for blood to flow.
